Crafty Recap: March Craft Night

(Crafty Hour happens each month at Modern Mouse from 5-7 PM on second Thursdays! Look out for the next one...come and craft with us!) We had a fantastic turnout for Modern Mouse's March Craft Night last Thursday! To kickstart the slow arrival of spring, yours truly (Polly, trusty Modern Mouse employee and ever-curious crafter) had the pleasure of leading a lovely group of folks in the art of felt flowers. Felt is such a versatile and easy-to-work with material that everyone took to it immediately, going above and beyond my simple instructions and creating some amazing pieces of work in a few short hours.

Polly explaining some serious technique, and a table full o' templates.

We worked primarily with Ecofelt, which is made from recycled plastic bottles, and a few scraps of wool felt, which is a little softer and thicker than the synthetic stuff. Felt is also great because it's inexpensive and easy to find; my favorite kinds of crafts are the ones I probably already have the supplies for in my house. What can I say? I'm a total lazybones.

Hard at work!

If you couldn't make it last week, but want to make a felt flower brooch of your own, here are some of the templates we used. The process is pretty straightforward; pick yer colors and shapes, cut 'em out, and keep adding petals 'til your bloom looks just right.

Busy as bees picking out the best color combos for our flowers!

At the end of the evening, everyone had at least two finished products, and not all were flowers! We had a gorgeous necklace, a wee butterfly, and even found ourselves delving into felt fruit. It was so much fun and all our flowers brightened a gloomy March night with color and conversation. Got ideas for future Craft Nights? Leave us a comment; we love input and want to find the most fun activities imaginable!

I love those felt roses and flowers. I’m thinking I could make one and put it on a hair clippy for my granddaughter or decorate a little dress with them for her.
It looks like it was a fun night, wish I could have been there!! Great idea Polly!!
    Cheer cheer.
